January Competition – The Future of Social Media

January 23, 2009 / by / 9 Comments

I’m getting pretty excited as we approach the next London Bloggers Meetup. Firstly because we’ve jumped over the 100 registrations mark for the first time ever. As it stands we have 117 bloggers confirmed for next week which is simply great.

The second reason why I’m excited is we have a last minute competition which will interest all of you bloggers working in social media. I have one FREE ticket to the Future of Social Media conference up for grabs, courtesy of our friends at United Business Media. What’s so great about that you might say, well, I’ll tell you:

– The tickets retail at over 500 quid, so that’s quite a saving

– The one day conference includes presentations from Andy Hobsbawn from Agency.com, Rohit Bhargava from Ogilvy, Mark Watts-Jones, Head of Innovation at Orange, Ask.com, Xing, Last.fm, Plaxo.com and more.

– There is a fantastic agenda covering topics such as leveraging online communities, determining the future of social media marketing and much more..

– To quote the organisers “This is an essential event for any marketing, PR, branding, online, digital and corporate communications professional looking to capitalise on the power of social media”.

For more details check out the website, but essentially the conference is being held at the Cumberland Hotel on Thursday 29th January.

What do you need to do to get your sticky mits on this fantastic prize?

As with most London Bloggers Meetup prizes it requires you to make me laugh. That’s right, the ticket will be awarded to the person who writes / draws / vlogs the most entertaining response to the following question in the comments for this post:

I deserve to win the free ticket to the Future of Social Media conference because…

Now that shouldn’t be too hard for all of you fantastically creative writers and bloggers. If you want to post a video, simply add it to YouTube (or other) and post up the link in the comments, or for images, email to me via the Meetup page.

Well, what are you waiting for, get started. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 27th Jan (i.e. at next week’s Meetup). The deadline for entries is 8pm on Monday 26th Jan.

Cheers,

Andy

The small print: the conditions of the prize are that a) you have to attend as I have only ONE ticket which rather than use myself, I’m giving away to one of you fine folk. b) you must live blog from the event. c) you must write a guest post for Londonbloggers.net about the conference.

Nothing too strenuous there I feel.

    1. For once I’m quick to reply, if you think of all the RSVPs I missed in the past months and…

    2. I need cheering up after just changing my Yes RSVP for next week’s meetup into No because the one-day-could-be-sister-in-law comes to stay that day and…

    3. I love to live blog events critically instead of merely cooing ‘wow, awesome, this is, like, totally, cool’ and…

    4. I’d love a day away from the office that didn’t pay for the ticket in the first place and…

    5. I frankly don’t see who else could do a better job, but Chuck Norris, and he can just will a ticket into being.

I am not one of those self proclaimed expert on social media that just repeats around what has been said by thousand of other people. I am someone who has genuine passion for it and that is still amazed by the powers of all these tools offered to anyone.

If I get the ticket, I will faithfully behave like a true member of the social media community: I will seize the opportunity to listen to real experts and then with humility bring everything valuable I can into the conversation.

Plus I will offer you a beer, I promise (I know it sounds like a bribe, but life is all about politics isn’t it??)

Thanks for the email announcing this competition.

I deserve to win the free ticket to the Future of Social Media conference because I am an extremely competitive person who can not stand to lose anything.

Although, if I win the ticket I will not be able to attend, therefore I promise I will give my ticket to the runner up. This good and charitable gesture will make me feel even better.

I want to go to the Social Media Conference because…

I want to fight zombies. Given the recent post on fanboy.com Social Media “Experts” are the Cancer of Twitter (and Must Be Stopped) (http://www.fanboy.com/2009/01/social-media-experts-rant.html), where the minions of social media experts on twitter are referred to as brain sucking zombies. I reckon the place must be crawling with them. I’ve been working out for three days straight since I heard about the competition and I believe I’m ready.

Once at the conference I’m going keep my eye out for any overbalanced twitter follower/following rations. That will lead me to the flesh-eating creators, who according to fanboy “can not be saved.” This species of zombie is known to feed off innocent tweets randomly following whomever just to feed their zombie impulses. I intend to fight these social media zombies until the startling realizations that based on a few conversations that I will probably have, that I too might actually be a zombie. It takes one to know one, right. At that point I’ll be faced with the climatic decision of ending my own life while I still have control or giving in to the mindless existence of a social media export. This is a decision I’m prepared, physically, mentally and spiritually to make.

Thanks for having such a fun contest for an awesome conference that is silly pricey for one day,

I deserve to win the free ticket to the Future of Social Media conference because…

I say three ‘Hail Mary’s’ and four ‘our father’s’ everyday before my fecking day at work

I wash behind my ears. (I bet you don’t)

I play records whilst my brother plays jingle bells

I will blog about the event and take photos. If the bloggers meetup overwhelmingly vote that I should take some upskirt photos from the event I will not let you down.

The first applicant said that only Chuck Norris could do a better job. Chuck Norris was my nickname at school (we both share the ultimate Norris surname). Guess that you have fallen behind me in the pecking order.

Me and Chuck both have beards. Only real men and special ladies can grow beards.

I don’t watch reality TV shows

I have a NES, duck hunt and the red Nintendo gun!

I cannot make today’s Bloggers meetup. However… I decided to do the honorable thing and un-register myself from the meetup event page. This has ensured that another blogging junkie has been able attend. (Some of you in this room do not always un-register yourselves…You know who you are…SHAME ON YOU)

I’m a passionate ‘social media’ user. Work in the field. Truly believe that it’s potentially transformational and empowering. I get excited by the possibilities…

… but the people who are in charge, the speakers/pundits/commentators just annoy me. A lot.

Maybe it’s the hero-worship? The hat-tipping, mutual-masturbation? The navel-gazing? Maybe it’s the identikit people, constant iPhoning, pinging out self-important Tweets or the too-cool-for-skool presentations?

Nah. I just hate the fact that they only pay lip-service to the mass-market. We the users. The great democratic force of the internet has created tighter elites and hierarchies than any Ancien Regime monarch ever did.

Guaranteed no bollocks, probable annoyance and bullshit detection, If you let me go. Pomposity will be pierced. I promise to seek out only the genuine nuggets and not the same old shit. And I’ll try to be funny…
