What is the hardest part of posting?
I was part of an event the other day about how to blog and everyone was SO hung up about their site, colour, logo, font, platform, topic and anything else you could think of that goes with blogging. My argument was these are the EASY things.
I speak from experience, I have spent years, (and I being nice to myself saying years) procrastinating over what to write. These days I just write, one in ten might be a good blog but I am in it for the journey and learning not the performance. My energy has gone through the roof as I pound a keyboard everyday or record a podcast.
Anyway we were at the event and I felt a little rude telling my mate he was pissing about and to just start writing, actually he was writing and not publishing, (something else I am super guilty of) he is way smarter than me and you can see the thought and effort that goes into what he creates. I set him the challenge of setting up a blogger blog right there and then and to publish something, he did. Now he is publishing blogs and thinking about his site design and I bet the site happens faster now he is publishing.
Here is what I did to sort myself out.
A few years ago I had a blog on every platform you could imagine (fool) I spent so much time looking at each blog I never wrote anything. Then last year I pulled all my “personal” blogs into Blogger.com and kept everything for “work” on WordPress. I love Blogger as it connects to my Google Apps and the Google+ mobile app automatically uploads and syncs photos and video from my mobile devices so I can select post pictures really fast. Everything is in one place.
I mention this because it really streamlined the publishing process for me, I post more because everything is there, I also use my mobile devices to post because of the way I am organised.
I am really interested in this fear of posting, the reward of “shipping” a post is brilliant! However, it is easy to get lost and distracted in all the “cosmetics” and “furniture” of blogging. As our LBM Audilabe podcast continues the one bit of advice experienced bloggers tell us is to “just do it” – post now – think later!
